おそらくキケローはこの10人が選ばれたことを知らず、クィンティリアーヌスは知っていると考えられることから、紀元前1世紀から紀元後1世紀の可能性が高い。また、ハリカルナッソスのディオニューシオスはこの10人が選ばれていることを知らないと考えられることから、それ以後の可能性が高い。Ian Worthington は、カラクテーのカイキリオス（Caecilius Calactinus）がこの10人を選んだと考えている（Worthington, `Canon', 244--263.）。
